What Are Student Visas?
Student visas are designed for individuals who wish to study in the U.S. at accredited institutions, including universities, vocational schools, and other educational programs. There are two primary categories:
- F-1 Visa: For academic studies at universities or language programs.
- M-1 Visa: For vocational or technical training.
Who Is Eligible for a Student Visa?
To qualify for a student visa, applicants must:
- Be accepted by a U.S. educational institution approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
- Prove they have sufficient financial support for tuition and living expenses.
- Demonstrate ties to their home country to show they intend to return after completing their studies.
What Is the Application Process for a Student Visa?
Once accepted into a SEVP-certified school, the institution will issue an I-20 form for F-1 or M-1 students. With this form, applicants can apply for the visa by completing Form DS-160 (Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application), paying the SEVIS I-901 fee, and attending an interview at a U.S. consulate or embassy.
Can You Work While on a Student Visa?
F-1 visa holders may be eligible for on-campus employment or Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows them to work in their field of study for a limited time. M-1 visa holders, however, are more restricted and generally can only engage in training after their studies.
How Long Can You Stay in the U.S. on a Student Visa?
F-1 and M-1 visa holders can remain in the U.S. for the duration of their studies. After completing their program, F-1 students have a 60-day grace period to prepare for departure or apply for post-graduation options, such as OPT. M-1 students have a 30-day grace period.
What Documents Are Required for a Student Visa?
You will need the following documents:
- Form I-20 (provided by the school).
- Form DS-160 confirmation page.
- Passport (valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay).
- Proof of financial support.
- Any academic transcripts or previous degrees.
